Working while you receive DSP

Receiving DSP does not mean you can never work. The system encourages work where it is possible, and the rules are designed so that trying work does not immediately destroy your payment. What matters is how many hours you work, how much you earn, and whether you keep reporting.
The 30-hour rule
You can generally work up to 30 hours a week in open employment, where people with and without disability work together in regular jobs, without losing your status as a pensioner. Your payment still reduces under the income test as your earnings rise, but the work itself does not cancel DSP. If you work 30 or more hours a week on an ongoing basis in open employment, Services Australia can suspend your DSP for up to two years. There are exceptions: the suspension for working 30 or more hours does not apply if you work for an Australian Disability Enterprise, work under the Supported Wage System, or receive ongoing support from Inclusive Employment Australia.
The nil-rate period
If your reported income takes your DSP to $0, that fortnight is called a nil-rate payment period. You can have up to 12 fortnights in a row at $0 before Services Australia suspends or cancels your payment. If you are paid at least $1 before the end of those 12 fortnights, your payment is not suspended or cancelled on that ground. If your income falls below the cut-off within the nil-rate period, payments restart automatically, without a new claim or waiting period, provided you keep reporting. You must keep reporting your income fortnightly during a nil-rate period, and your partner's income counts as well if you are in a couple.
Suspension for up to two years
If your employment income stays over the cut-off for more than 12 fortnights in a row, or you work 30 or more hours a week on an ongoing basis, your DSP can be suspended for up to two years rather than cancelled outright. That suspension is the safety net for trying work: if your work reduces or stops within the two years, you can tell Services Australia and have payments restored without lodging a fresh DSP claim and proving medical eligibility again. You can keep your Pensioner Concession Card for up to two years during the suspension period.
Reporting and support
Report your employment income, your hours, and your partner's income every fortnight, even in weeks when you earn nothing. Report through myGov or by phone, and keep your payslips until the reporting period is settled. If you want help finding or keeping work, Inclusive Employment Australia can help with job search, workplace adjustments, and employer support, and it can also advise whether its ongoing support protects your DSP at 30 hours or more. The key habit is simple: report on time, report honestly, and tell Services Australia promptly when your work pattern changes.
